Event description:

Are you committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle for men? Join the Yale African American Affinity Group (YAAA) and the Yale Latino Networking Group (YLNG) on Saturday, June 15, 2019 for our eleventh annual Men’s Health Day Initiative. On Men’s Health Day, YAAA & YLNG will partner with medical volunteers and other community partners from the Greater New Haven area to offer free blood pressure screenings to community members at barbershops, salons and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s annual Free Market.

YAAA started this event over a decade ago to promote health among African American men in our local community. African American men experience cardiovascular disease at a higher rate than men and women in other groups and are more likely to be disengaged from the health care system. We believe that a free blood pressure screening event in a barbershop - an important social and cultural center in many communities - during a weekend celebrating fatherhood serves as a great opportunity to promote reengagement in the health care system and raise health awareness.

Over the last decade, the support of volunteers has been critical to the success of Men’s Health Day.

You can contribute to YAAA Men’s Health Day 2019 by becoming a volunteer.

Medical Volunteer - Medical Volunteers (all health care professionals) will administer blood pressure tests and provide feedback to participating community members.

On-Site Volunteer - Volunteers will work alongside our Medical Volunteers to manage the event and hand out information at individual locations.

If you’re interested in volunteering this year, please contact Jamaal Thomas at jamaal.thomas@yale.edu.
