YAAA & FLY Emotional Intelligence Workshop Recap

Monday, April 18, 2016

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the inspiring and interactive Emotional Intelligence (EI) workshop, led by Dena Simmons, Director of Implementation from Yale’s Center of Emotional Intelligence on March 30th, 2016. Dena’s presentation drew from her experiences as a proud Bronx native, student, teacher, researcher, and activist. She shared with us the EI tools to create a workplace where we can feel safe to thrive and succeed in. As well as, guided us in defining how we want to feel in our own workplace and setting SMART goals in taking actions to build them.

Dena explained how the fundamental RULER tools can help us create a better workplace. RULER is an acronym that stands for Recognizing (emotions in self and others), Understanding (the causes and consequences of emotions), Labeling (emotions accurately), Expressing (emotions appropriately), and Regulating (emotions effectively). She explained how the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence uses the power of emotions to establish a more effective and compassionate workplace in today’s society.
