What is your current role at Yale University?
Currently, I am a Diversity Support Specialist for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Work+Life Programs.
What are your main responsibilities?
My prominent office roles are liaison to four affinity groups and assistant to Work+Life Programs, helping to support the day-to-day operations. What that really means is being a thought partner for affinity groups, knowing how they work and who they serve, and helping them reach their goals. For Work+Life Programs, that means understanding whom we serve, the employees of Yale, and how we can better serve them to create balance within their work and personal lives.
What do you like most about your work?
What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people. Much of my job involves connecting with, assisting , and forming relationships with people.
How does your job affect your general lifestyle?
My job has increased my social life. I meet a lot of people and learn about various events and activities happening around the city, which often leads me to go out and have a good time, or to support others. Moreover, it makes me feel more engaged in my community. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer, and I try to take advantage of those whenever possible.
How did you begin your career?
I began my career by leaving the US Air Force and going from a job in aircraft maintenance to administration roles. A lot of it was just trying to figure out what I wanted to do and navigating from job to job for a little bit.
What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?
In preparing for this role, it’s important to emphasize leadership and emotional intelligence. Mastering the art of providing exceptional customer service can truly elevate the job experience.
What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?
Two things have attributed to success in my field. First, is my curiosity to learn and want to gain more experience. Second, is being flexible in the field because things can change fast. It may not go your way. Flexibility is key to a successful and less stressful life, and it helps with patience.
If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
I believe where I am is where I am supposed to be. Don’t know what my life would look like if I did something else.
What does YAAA mean to you and how have you contributed as a member?
Being a member of YAAA is fantastic. I value having a safe space in multiple areas of my life where I can connect with coworkers who share the same identity. In this group, we genuinely look out for each other, offer support, and make meaningful contributions to the community.
