What is your current role at Yale University?

My current role is Copyright Librarian and Contracting Specialist at the Yale Library.

What are your main responsibilities?

I chair the Library’s License Review Team. This committee manages and maintains a consistent process for reviewing agreements, working closely with colleagues across the library regarding the acquisition of digital and physical materials. I also serve as a resource for copyright information for creators of copyrighted content. I create and maintain educational materials regarding the appropriate use of copyrighted resources consistent with the university’s policies and practices. I inform and educate the library and the university community about new developments as appropriate.

What do you like most about your work?

I like that I learn something new every day. To help people, whether with a contract, copyright, or both. I have to learn a bit about the type of agreement, content, and the work people do.

How does your job affect your general lifestyle?

I think being an academic librarian helps me keep a balanced lifestyle. Being at a university also provides opportunities for exposure to many different fields of study, continued learning, and professional development.

How did you begin your career?

I went to law school and practiced at a small firm, before deciding I wanted something different. I ended up working at the Chicago Defender Newspaper as the archives/copyright manager. Through this position, an idea that floated around when I was in law school resurfaced—getting my Masters in library and information science. Working at the Defender, I met many librarians and archivists. One encouraged me to get the degree. This archivist also sent me the job notice for my first job in this field.

What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?

First, I would say be open to learning. I think my degrees, most of which I pursued out of curiosity, are all helpful to me in doing my work. Copyright librarianship is a very niche field. Most have both law and library degrees, while some have one or the other. I think if you are interested in this area, there are additional ways to development professionally, and learn about copyright.

What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?

  • Effective communication
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Collaborative/team oriented
  • Ability to explain difficult or complex concepts
If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?

I would take the same path because it led me to where I am today.

What does YAAA mean to you and how have you contributed as a member?

I joined Yale in April 2020 and I found YAAA to be a very welcoming space. I have tried to attend as many programs as possible. So far, I have attended book club meetings, educational programs, and fitness activities.
