What is your current role at Yale University?

I am currently the Managing Director, of Catering - Yale Hospitality.

What are your main responsibilities?

I oversee all aspects of the catering operation. My team is comprised of 1 Assistant Director of Catering, 3 Catering Sales Managers, 2 Banquet Captains, and a Maître ‘d who schedules and leads the execution of each event, alongside a team of incredible local banquet servers. We plan and execute over 3,000+ events/meetings annually on campus.

What do you like most about your work?

I enjoy having the chance to contribute to the vibrant campus life by cultivating impressive experiences for a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff of the university. I love being able to express creativity through menu customization and event décor and design. Most importantly, my favorite part of my role is leading a team, giving me the chance to mentor and develop individuals, helping them grow professionally while achieving a shared vision of excellence.

How does your job affect your general lifestyle?

My role provides opportunities for creativity and collaboration across campus, which can be energizing and fulfilling. It might also offer a sense of accomplishment and pride, knowing that I am contributing to the university community in a meaningful way. The fast-paced environment and the need to stay ahead of trends in the catering and hospitality industry keeps me engaged and constantly learning. This adds a fun sprinkle of excitement to my everyday life. I have been able to form healthy friendships outside of work with colleagues in different departments as well.

How did you begin your career?

I began my career as a Catering Coordinator with W Hotels in New Orleans, where I quickly advanced into management roles. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for event planning and realized it was the field I wanted to dedicate my professional career to. Recognized as one of the top catering sales managers in the country, I felt inspired to share my expertise and passion for event design with others. This drive to mentor and lead others naturally steered me toward pursuing leadership roles within the hospitality industry.

What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?

Gaining practical experience is sooo crucial, so I suggest starting with entry-level positions, such as a catering coordinator or banquet server. These roles offer valuable insights into the day-to-day operations and help you understand the nuances of direct client interactions and event logistics. Internships and volunteering are also excellent ways to build your skills and network within the industry. Building a professional network through industry associations, conferences, and networking events can open doors and provide opportunities for mentorship. Learning from seasoned professionals also offers invaluable guidance and a broader perspective on the industry. I cannot stress this last one enough, staying current with industry trends and continuously learning is critical. Whether it’s adapting to new dietary preferences or incorporating the latest event technologies, being adaptable and proactive will set you apart from the rest. Developing leadership and financial management skills will also prepare you for more advanced roles in the field.

What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?

Developing skills like customer service, organization, and communication is essential. Catering is a people-oriented business, so understanding how to meet and exceed client expectations while managing multiple tasks is vital.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself?

I would choose the same path. I am very happy with the career I have chosen. I was very careful in ordering my career path and staying with a profession that fed.

What does YAAA mean to you and how have you contributed as a member?

YAAA offers a vital safe space where individuals can connect with others who share similar cultural backgrounds and experiences. This sense of community is crucial, especially for those who may have felt isolated or lacked support in other areas of their lives. Personally, I find it deeply fulfilling to contribute to this environment, as it not only helps others gain cultural understanding, but also plays a key role in addressing and removing unconscious biases.

Additionally, YAAA is excellent at fostering connections through various networking and mentoring opportunities. Whether it’s through organized events or informal gatherings, the group provides multiple avenues for members to engage, support one another, and develop professionally. I appreciate how YAAA creates a supportive network where individuals can thrive and feel valued, filling a crucial void that might otherwise exist.
